Elijah hears the still small voice…

When the Spirit of God comes to us, He may not give us glorious visions to shake us out of our lethargy.  He may

simply tell us to do ordinary things, things we might not immediately associate with Him.  The prophet Elijah in

his fear and depression was led from a successful ministry to a cave at Mount Horeb where God spoke to him,

not in the mighty wind, nor in the earthquake, nor in a fire, but in a whisper. “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

(Translation: “Get up off your pity pot and get busy.”)

Discouragement turns our eyes from God and His wondrous creation, turns us inward to the dark recesses of our

minds where no good thing dwells. But when God moves, He directs us to take natural, simple steps into events

where we would never have imagined He would be.  Suddenly He is there. We step out of our depression. But

we must step.  Elijah had to leave Samaria and go through the wilderness to Mt. Horeb before he could hear that

whisper of God’s voice.  If he had remained and tried to overcome his own obstacles he would not have heard

God’s voice.  But in following the Spirit of God, Elijah was reminded that he was not alone, that there were

7,000 other believers standing with him. God was there.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The institutional church’s idea of a servant of God is not like Christ’s idea. His idea is

that we serve Him by being the servants of others. Jesus Christ actually “out-socialized”

the socialists. He said that in His kingdom the greatest one would be the servant of all

(see Matthew 23:11).

The real test of a saint is not one’s willingness to preach the gospel, but one’s willingness

to do something like washing the disciples’ feet— that is, being willing to do those things

that seem unimportant in human estimation but count as everything to God.

It was Paul’s delight to spend his life for God’s interests in other people, and he did not

care what it cost. But before we will serve, we stop to ponder our personal and financial

concerns— “What if God wants me to go over there? And what about my salary? What is

the climate like there? Who will take care of me? A person must consider all these

things.” All that is an indication that we have reservations about serving God.

But the apostle Paul had no conditions or reservations. Paul focused his life on Jesus

Christ’s idea of a New Testament saint; that is, not one who merely proclaims the gospel,

but one who becomes broken bread and poured-out wine in the hands of Jesus Christ

for the sake of others. if we are totally surrendered to Him, we have no goals of our own

to serve.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We try to understand how things work in the world, how to navigate our course through life.

We are often hesitant, confused, or frozen in our actions in the world, afraid of making a mistake,

looking for His light to lead us.  But NEVER let a past failure defeat your next step.

God does have a plan for us.  Going on to the next step involves finding that plan and accepting

the mission God gives us. Discerning God’s guidance in our life, making right decisions and

following the correct path may look unattainable, but Jesus left us a roadmap.  “I am the Way,

and the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

As we stumble along, as we seek to keep to His path, we can trust Him absolutely because

He is our perfect redemption.  We trust in His peace that comes with prayer and surrender of

self to His Divine Will.

Go with God, ever and forever, and let Christ lead you.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Before His death, Jesus asked His disciples to eat of that last supper in remembrance of

Him. As His disciples in modern times, we are asked the same:  challenged by what He has

done in the past and consoled by His love at the same time. We think of our Lord in the last

days before His crucifixion:

“Do this in remembrance of me.”

A last request.  A final charge.  A parting plea.

Throughout the Scriptures, God asks His people to remember His mighty works of the past,

His kindness and tenderness for His children. But God also remembers who we are, as we

will see this month. He remembers us and would have us remember Him as well.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

“This is a day the Lord has made; Let us Rejoice and be Glad in it.” Ps 118:24

We smile, the world is lovelier, the sun shines brighter and warmer, and we feel… lighter.

We look up and outward.  And the amazing thing, people smile back!

A dear friend, passed now, walked the Downtown Mall just smiling and greeting people, total

strangers that he met as though friends, and often made one or two in the walk.  He was gifted

to bring joy to others, and in their stressed hurry-about world, to remind them: “Be Happy!”

The Risen Christ beckons us to raise up our hearts in joy and fulfill his charge to us: “Love the

Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all

your strength. ... Love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12:29-31

Let us rejoice in the Light of Christ in these days of Spring, and give thanks to our Heavenly

Father for His Love and Care.  Hallelujah!  He is risen.  Be joyful in the promise of the

Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Some days, we just feel lucky. Fortune smiles on us. Life is going our way.  We feel blessed

and are grateful to God for protecting us and gracing our lives.

But fortunes can reverse.  Bad things happen. Adversity strikes, and the balance of Life can

tilt us on a downward spiral.  And, if we are wise, we feel blessed and are grateful to God for

protecting us and gracing our lives.

Jesus reminds us that we are carried in God’s hand always, provided for, and watched over.

If we move with Faith, all happens in the best way possible for the moment.  We work with

His will within the world in which we exist, right now.

When our luck runs out, we are enriched in Faith. Treasure God’s blessings, value His Mercy,

and prize the gift of His son, Jesus, the Christ and His Love.  God is with us, and God is for us.

Who or what can stand against the Spirit of God?

Move always in God’s Light, and feel God’s Love within you.  Christ’s Peace!

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

What is a good retirement?

He had saved every penny to put money aside only to have the bottom fall out of the economy

and much of what he had accumulated was cast to the wind.  He had lost nearly half of his

retirement account.  He declared with despair that he did not know what he was going to do in

his old age.  My friend looked at his loss and concluded that there was no hope. Life had dealt

him a cruel blow from which he could not recover. He saw only a dead-end.

He did not know our “Jehovah-Jireh,” our “Lord Who Provides” so often spoken of in

the scriptures. God revealed Himself to Abraham in the book of Genesis as the One who

would provide all things.  (Gen. 22:1-14) God sees in advance what we will need and provides

a way beforehand for our needs to be met. What He did in times past, He can do for us today.

The scriptures contain stories of His provision to encourage us when life looks grim and we

need an extra boost of faith in Him.  We need only to let go of our own striving and trust God

who loves us dearly.

As we go through the verses in this short month, we see His desire to be our provider, our

“Jehovah-Jireh” even when we have little hope of a solution to our predicaments.

Dear Partners in Prayer,

A Great Cloud of Witnesses are on this earth, as well as those who are already with the Lord!

At any time of day or night, all over the world, Christians are praying and interceding for

others. Some pray in their “prayer closet” and others pray in groups and still others are part of

a 24 hour, seven days a week “prayer center.”  Did you know that the ancient monasteries were

often formed as prayer centers where intercession was made at every hour of the day?

Here in the United States there are houses of prayer, in Kansas, St. Louis, Atlanta, Maryland,

Connecticut, to name just a few.  Here people gather at all hours of the day and night for the

purpose of making intercession for their communities, their local churches, and for the world

community.   Prayer can change the local churches and communities in some powerful ways.

If you have access to the internet you might try googling “International House of Prayer” and

look for yourself.

In this New Year let us think about the role of intercession in our own prayer life.  Included are

some suggestions as to topics of prayer one might use to effectively intercede for others.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

What will the future hold for us?  Many of us have a nagging anxiety about what the future

might bring.  The Jewish people also had anxiety about the future of their nation during that

first century AD.  Subject to an occupying government, without the ability to execute the law

as God had directed, the ruling party struggled to maintain some semblance of order.  Their

Deliverer had not come.  Or so they thought.

Yet, here’s the thing: The God who orchestrated the birth of the Savior had already set out the

plan throughout Scripture, had anyone been paying close attention. The answers were all there!

As we go through the Christmas season, let’s look at a few of the prophecies God set out and

how He fulfilled those prophecies.  Perhaps this will encourage us as we face uncertain times

in our future.  God really DOES have a plan and He will bring all things to fulfillment. Those

who walk with Him are included! We can praise and thank Him even though we cannot see

the particulars ahead.

Dear Partners, chosen ones and beloved by God,

(Jn. 15: 16, 17: 20-24)

On the night He was betrayed, when He knew circumstances would be bleak for his disciples

just ahead, Jesus reassured them, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you

so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my

name the Father will give you.”  Jesus reassured them that they were special, they were His

beloved ones and that His love would overcome the coming dark time.

Then in His prayer for all His followers, He included you and me, people who would

later believe in Him through the disciples.  “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for

those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just

as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that

you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we

are one… Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have

loved me.  Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my

glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.”

This month we will look at our position in Christ as chosen and beloved.
