Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Every so often, I pick up a small book of correspondences written three centuries ago called "The Practice of the Presence of God." An obscure monk, Brother Lawrence, worked in a monastery kitchen and walked so closely with our Lord that many sought his ?secret.' He protested that he had no secret, that he just kept God's Presence and Providence utmost in his thoughts and mind every minute of every day.
Unlike the self-sufficiency of our time, Brother Lawrence relied on his Heavenly Father in all situations from major decisions to the minute details of the kitchen. He wrote, "We cannot avoid the dangers of life without God's continual help so we should ask Him for it ceaselessly. However, how can we ask for help unless we are with Him? To be with Him, we must cultivate the holy habit of thinking about Him often."
During October, we will look at Scripture passages that remind us that God is with us always, that He cares for us intimately, and we will look at exhortations in His Word to keep our minds on Him always.
