Dear Partners in Prayer,
An important part of prayer is thanksgiving. Here are some of the things that the Bible says about thanksgiving, or the attitude of gratitude:
- Thanksgiving is a law of God to obey: In 1Thessalonians 5:18, we see that giving thanks is a precept to obey: "In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." It is God's will and commandment that we be thankful.
- Thanksgiving is a gift to God: Thanksgiving is both our gift to God and an acknowledgement of God's gifts to us. We "offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually… the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name." The author of Hebrews tells us to offer thanks to God and that by "doing good and sharing…God is well pleased." (Heb 13:15-16)
- A prayer without thanksgiving is defective: Prayer is not petition alone, but rather "Petitions and thanksgivings". Paul urges us, "in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God" (Phil 4:6). Effective prayer is not just asking, but also giving thanks for our blessings.
- Thanksgiving is a life-pervading principle: Thanksgiving is not only for special occasions. "Giving thanks always for all things" is the rule (Eph 5:20). "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him" (Col 3:17). Don't wait for some special blessing before giving thanks. The breath you are taking right now is a blessing enough. Use it to give thanks to God.
